ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of parenting from a family systems framework. It first offers a brief review of systems concepts. Then it approaches parenting from three perspectives: the parenting of mothers versus fathers; the effect of the marital relationship on parenting; and, finally, the influence of siblings on parenting. Next, research reflective of a more truly systemic nature is noted. Finally, methodological implications of a systems approach to parent–child interaction are discussed, and conclusions are offered.
