ABSTRACT
To study infant-parent processes is to study developmental processes — development both of the individuals and of the relationship. For that reason, this chapter presents a developmental approach to communication in the first relationship. I review communication scholars’ perspectives of early interaction, describe the development of the first relationship using contributions from communication and related disciplines, discuss attempts to predict later functioning from early interaction, and propose an agenda for future research.
