ABSTRACT

“It's just not enough,” thought Dr. Sandra Lopez-Jacobi, as she walked back to her office. Over the 20 years she'd been teaching at Inner City Hospital she felt that ethical concerns needed more emphasis in the training of young physicians in the medicine residency program. She had just come from talking with two residents about a very sick indigent patient, who was no longer able to communicate her wishes about treatment. “The residents had strong opinions but too little information and experience,” she thought. These brief conversations, carried out hurriedly in the corridor when other matters were pressing, just didn't allow for the careful consideration she thought these cases deserved. She decided to talk to Dr. Ann Wilson, chief resident, about putting together a group of residents to discuss ethical problems in more detail.
