ABSTRACT

I do not know what Shelly Rosaldo would have wanted to say about Ilongot speech acts now some years after her article first appeared. I am sure she would have had something to say. She would have reflected further, and have had further insight to share with us, just as she reflected further about Ilongot oratory, the subject of an earlier paper in Language in Society (Rosaldo, 1973), and deepened her interpretation of it in a later book, Knowledge and Passion (1980).
