ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 begins with several standard bibliographies that describe mass communications’ historical literature published as books and journals. Particularly useful starting points among these resources are Caswell’s GUIDE TO SOURCES IN AMERICAN JOURNALISM HISTORY (0146) and Pollay’s INFORMATION SOURCES IN ADVERTISING HISTORY (0152). Although Startt and Sloan’s HISTORICAL METHODS IN MASS COMMUNICATION (0261) offers solid information on historical research methods, similar guides are needed for the other fields of mass communications.
