ABSTRACT

The globalised world of crime demands borderless cooperation between police organizations. Not only is it important to collaborate to solve criminal cases but it is also important to use this cooperation to develop techniques, expertise and professionalism. Nordic police cooperation has been functioning for many decades and it is based on a different set of agreements, unions and programmes, as well as informal day-to-day contact between the different countries. During the last 15 years, such cooperation has expanded to include the Baltic Sea states. These successes on the periphery of European Union (EU) regional cooperation have received relatively little attention in English language academic commentary. This chapter seeks to introduce the Nordic police cooperation arena to a wider non-Nordic and non-Baltic audience. It summarizes the different forms of cooperation and briefly explores why the police organizations in the area work so well together.
