ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a new type of web-based methodology for planning evaluation from the inhabitants’ point of view. The collection of softGIS methods enables users to express their everyday environmental, localitybased experiences. In this chapter three case studies will be introduced applying softGIS methodology in ex post planning evaluation projects. These cases include the evaluation of (1) the general perceived environmental quality of a city; (2) the evaluation of the perceived safety of a neighbourhood; and (3) the evaluation of environmental child-friendliness of a city. In all cases the connections between urban structure variables, experiential and/or behavioural variables and well-being and health measures are examined. The aim of the chapter is to discuss what kind of knowledge softGIS meth-

odology produces, what are the possible benefits of location-based experiential information for the end users (i.e. planners), and what are the key future challenges of this kind of public participation GIS (PPGIS) method.
