ABSTRACT

This chapter will offer some insights on how to measure regional conflict levels in the context of regional integration processes. The idea is to find an instrument that can adequately measure the extent of regional conflicts, with particular focus on peace and security aspects. It also links to the issue of regional political interaction (Nye 1971), that is a measure for the intensity of political integration within a particular region (or any other unit, such as the state, micro-region, local region, etc. However, this chapter aims at providing measures for the conflict dimension of political interaction in a particular region. This will be followed by some examples on how the measures can be used in specific regions.
