ABSTRACT

In Chapter 14, Rob van Tulder provides a general discussion of the present global structures of multinational enterprises (MNEs), the key role of foreign direct investment (FDI), and variations in MNEs' strategies for corporate social responsibility (CSR). In Chapter 15, Andreas Nölke discussed the role and strategies of a particular group of MNEs, namely those emerging from non-triad countries. In this chapter the role of MNEs will be discussed from a third angle: how the role of MNEs in the global oil industry varies over time, in particular how changes in the relationship between MNEs and governments have influenced the governance structure of this important industry.
