ABSTRACT

The external security situation in India has increasingly become a cause for concern, mainly because of the attitudes of China and Pakistan. China, which until recently had come to be regarded as a peaceful and non-provocative neighbour, has been indulging in behaviour which gives rise to suspicions about its intentions. It has been questioning every act of exercise of sovereignty by India over Arunachal Pradesh and has been allowing frequent incursions into India across the Line of Actual Control (LAC). In its military modernisation, it has kept itself significantly ahead of India. Therefore, despite China's official pronouncements to the contrary, the Chinese threat has to be taken seriously by the security establishment in India.
