ABSTRACT
Aspects of the organisation and structure of football in the UK have been considered in several books, academic and popular, as well as in numerous academic papers. The intention of this chapter is not to replicate this extensive material, but rather to provide some background context in terms of the political and regulatory framework within which English and Scottish football sit, before going on to discuss a few key factors which help to explain the current structure of English and Scottish football, the changes that have taken place therein and challenges that lie ahead.
