ABSTRACT

Football has been by far the most popular participation team sport in Switzerland for a number of decades. In 2009, the Swiss Football Association (FA) had 1,450 clubs and 272,000 registered players (including approximately 22,000 women)—almost 10 times as many as ice hockey, 3 times more than shooting, and 5 times more than tennis, which are the most popular individual sports. 1 Therefore, the Swiss FA appears to be successively fulfilling one of its stated goals, that of promoting football.
