ABSTRACT

It was 1942. I was nearly five years old, and the school year in Toledo, Ohio, was about to begin. However, I was not headed to kindergarten. Instead, my mother had decided to be my teacher for the year. That first morning, she was clear in her instructions to me: “Go outdoors and play with Oliver and Lulu. You can play one game, and then I’ll call you back home and meet you in your bedroom.”
