ABSTRACT

Motivation is arguably one of the most important determinants of team and multiteam effectiveness. In this chapter, we discuss motivation theory and research in the context of teams and multiteam systems (MTSs). We begin with a description of motivation at the individual level of analysis, and then briefly review theory and research that extend the study of motivation to the team context. Next, we discuss motivation in the context of multiteam systems. In particular, we examine the person and situation factors that affect motivation for interteam teamwork and motivation for communications, cooperation, and coordination behaviors between members of different teams. In the final section, we identify gaps in the research regarding motivation in team and multiteam contexts and suggest potentially fruitful directions for future research.
