Possibilities to Reduce Tropical Deforestation by Carbon Funding

Not only does tropical deforestation cause dramatic losses of biodiversity and environmental services (Lambin and Geist 2003), but it is also responsible for 15–25 percent of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Achard et al. 2002; Watson et al. 2000). Thus, reducing tropical deforestation would simultaneously mitigate what are probably the two most pressing environmental problems of our time.
