His major works include Poems (1842), The Princess (1847), In Memoriam (1850), Maud (1855), and Idylls of the King (1859-1874; printed in one volume in 1889). Using literary and mythological sources and experimental or relatively unfamiliar verse forms (idyl, monodrama, medley, dramatic monologue), his works explore madness, a self divided between action and regression, the search for solid grounds for religious faith, troubled sexuality, the romance of the past, and the artist's mission.
