ABSTRACT
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the defense of Christianity was still entrusted to such works as Bishop Butler's Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, published in 1736 to refute the deists, and the writings of William Paley, whose Natural Theology (1802) sought to sanctify the conclusions of seventeenth-century science with the "argument from design."
