BEALE, DOROTHEA (1831-1906) Principal of the prestigious pioneer girls'

public school Cheltenham Ladies' College from 1858-1906, Dorothea Beale was important in the movement to change education for middle-class girls and women. Her edited version (1869) of those sections of the Taunton Commission Report (1868-1869) dealing with the inadequacies of girls' schools publicized the commission's evidence and lent weight to the arguments of reformers.
