ABSTRACT

Since the mid-1960s there has been a rapid increase in the number of pupils entered for, and passing, public examinations. In 1965 entries for external examinations totalled approximately 650,000, with almost 1,500,000 passes at GCE and CSE. 1 By 1979 this had increased threefold to 1,700,000 exam entries and 4,500,000 passes. 2
