ABSTRACT

Ba’win is an elderly Bofi forager Nganga (traditional healer), father, and grandfather. He has been married three times; his first and third wives are deceased and he remains with his second wife, Dekay. He had 6 children with his first wife, with only one surviving adolescent girl who now lives in a nearby community with her deceased mother’s kin. He had only one child with his third wife, a 4-year-old girl who lives in another community about 20 miles away, also with her deceased mother’s kin. He has had 8 children with Dekay, four of whom are living, two who died as infants, and two who were born prematurely and died at birth. Three of their children live with them, two adolescent boys and their 3-year-old daughter. Their adult daughter (early 20s) lives next door to them with her husband, who is still performing bride-service, i.e., service to in-laws.
