ABSTRACT

Qiu and his wife, both only children, come from Guangzhou, one of the biggest cities in Mainland China. After years of gradually recognizing the instinctual desire to be a father that had begun to stir in adolescence, Qiu and his wife embraced the unexpected news of their first child’s impending arrival while still pursuing postgraduate degrees in Europe, both because they wanted to have their own baby and because they were profoundly opposed to abortion. With support from both families, Qiu stayed in the UK to continue his studies after learning of his wife’s pregnancy, while his wife returned to China where she could receive better care from their families while preparing for birth.
