ABSTRACT

Munir grew up in a Muslim family in rural Bangladesh in the 1960s. He is the oldest among five siblings, with two brothers and two sisters. His father had enough income from farming to bear the expenses of Munir’s college education. His brothers, however, were not very successful in school and therefore joined their father working on the farm. Likewise, his sisters had to stop going to school after completing elementary school. When each of his sisters became 16, Munir actively assisted his father in arranging marriages for them.
