ABSTRACT
The conjunction of the name of Adam Smith with the subject of theology is not unremarkable, for it is a matter of some dispute quite what Smith’s attitude to religion was. In saying this, however, it is immediately necessary to distinguish between revealed religion, in this case the religion of Hebrew and Christian scriptures, and natural religion; and then to distinguish, correspondingly, between dogmatic and natural theology.
