ABSTRACT

China has long considered itself a developing country and a presumptive leader of the developing world, but it was not until recently that China’s global footprint had actually extended to the developing world. Previously, Beijing’s role with the developing world was more rhetorical than real – now it is being felt in many ways. This chapter will consider, first, China’s growing economic ties with developing states, then its evolving diplomacy towards them, and finally the impact of these changes on China’s place in global governance.
