ABSTRACT

In the introduction to his now classic study Ideology and Organization in Communist China, Franz Schurmann stated that ‘China is like a vast building made of different kinds of brick and stone. However it was put together, it stands. What holds it together is ideology and organization.’ 1 Ideology plays a less salient role in today’s China than during Mao’s time, but organization is increasingly what binds China together and will determine the future of China’s political order.
