ABSTRACT

In Australia, teachers are prepared for teaching through multiple study pathways in university settings including: (1) four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Education degrees; (2) four-year double degrees comprising a degree in the subject discipline area and a degree in education; and (3) one-year Graduate Diploma in Education programs after an initial three-year Bachelor’s degree in the discipline area. In addition, two-year graduate level Master of Teaching programs after a Bachelor’s degree in the discipline area have become popular pathways into teaching in recent years. Four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Education degrees are often the preferred pathway for school leavers preparing to teach primary (elementary) years, while the graduate entry or ‘end-on’ programs are often the preferred pathways for those preparing to teach in secondary schools.
