ABSTRACT

Giving learners ownership over what is learnt, deciding how and when it is learnt, has allowed literacy to grow progressively. No longer do we have four different subjects every day, with four totally unrelated word banks. Learners are able to apply reading strategies in order to make connections between the text and their lives. They engage in pre-reading, reading, and post-reading strategies in order to enhance comprehension and apply evidence-based strategies to learn new vocabulary. This approach increases the effectiveness of their reading comprehension, written and oral communication as they read and analyse literary, persuasive and expository texts.
