ABSTRACT
The postwar manufacture of synthetic fibres is a product of the exploitation of petrochemical innovations by rayon manufacturers. The organization of the modern synthetic fibre industry closely resembles that of the rayon industry in 1939 at the time of the first commercial production of synthetic fibres. The nine leading companies, ranked by 1979 fibre sales value, were all major participants in the prewar rayon industry.
