ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the emotional and intellectual changes that occur during adolescence, and the way in which these changes affect how adolescents think and feel. The interplay between the developing cognitive structures and control of the emotions is discussed. The final section looks at the transition between primary and secondary school in respect of intellectual and emotional development. The intellectual changes that occur during adolescence allow for greater cognitive capacity, so the way in which transition can provide opportunities for pupils to develop intellectually is explored. For some pupils transfer to a new situation is fraught with anxiety, apprehension and fear. The reasons why transition for some pupils is stressful, and yet for others it is a positive experience, are also considered.
