Building Coherence in Web-Based and Other Non-Traditional Reading Environments

Multimedia sources of information, particularly those offered by the Internet, provide tremendous possibilities as well as challenges to the individual user. In this chapter we present the view that to understand these possibilities and challenges—and to tip the balance from challenges towards possibilities—we need to know the actual processes by which an individual maneuvers through and integrates (or fails to integrate) information provided through different sources.
