ABSTRACT
The imperial coinage of Rome remains one of the major testimonies of the power of the Roman government in its hey-day, and to the strength of the ideal of Rome in its decline. It came into being quite unsystematically, gradually taking over the roles of its Republican precursor, and retaining for many years ambivalent, quasi-republican features.
