ABSTRACT
As the Roman Empire expanded the need for rapid communication between distant parts and its centre became increasingly important for good government. Events in each province needed to be known in Rome, particularly those occurring in areas where detachments of the Roman army were on duty. The efficient deployment of troops necessitated both the construction of good roads in each province, and the use of ships if the army was moved from one part of the Empire to another.
