ABSTRACT

Roman divinities were introduced to their provinces at the time of occupation, were adopted, absorbed and adapted to indigenous taste. Different reactions of native to Roman religious influences may be seen in different areas: in some regions Rome, at least overtly, swamped native religious culture. In others, the indigenous element clearly shows through. One sharp division may be recognized. It is only in the western, Latin-speaking areas that the Roman pantheon was adopted in any real sense. In the hellenized east, Greek divinities were firmly established and it was to them that indigenous divinities remained linked rather than to the later intrusive religion of Rome.
