ABSTRACT
MEASUREMENT IS CONCERNED WITH the assignment of values or quantities to particular objects or events. It should be recognised at the outset that measurements exist and are carried out in a variety of forms that reflect the diversity of data used by geographers and the range of phenomena that they study. With this in mind, geographers and other scientists have found it useful to identify four different orders or scales on which data can be measured.
