ABSTRACT

A generation has passed since a large-scale uprising broke out in Gwangju in May, 1980. A considerable amount of research has been done concerning this uprising. The political and socio-economic background and the historic significances have been studied in various ways. 1 Though carried out in a general way, systematic analyses of the process of the struggle have also been done. 2 An analysis of the struggle in an international context, 3 another from a female viewpoint, 4 as well as studies on democratization and human rights in neighboring countries are also under way. 5 Further, in some fictional works, the struggle has been used as literary material. 6
