ABSTRACT

Families exist in a great variety and complexity. However, certain basic elements are alike, such as the identity of the family versus the outside world and the attempt by family members to deal with crises within the boundaries of the family unit first. The way a family copes in a crisis situation is shaped by its unique circumstances and challenges. Life-altering events and crises can happen to every family at any time. Service providers need to be able to help families through life crises. The crisis discussed here is the realization that one family member has a disability.
