ABSTRACT

This may seem a strange question with which to begin an article about sustainable developmental education (SDE). However, the devotion of volume 7(2) to issues of language, and particularly to the language of sustainability and its implications for environmental educators, serves to foreground the fact that the relationship of language systems (which are essentially culture-driven) to the workings of the ecosystem (which is not essentially culture-driven) is highly problematic in a way which has still been insufficiently addressed in the SDE literature.
