ABSTRACT
Identity is just one way of thinking personhood, a way that is particularly Western and particularly useful for global capitalism, with a long history through concepts of interest (Adam Smith, 1776/1970), rationality, individuality, self, character, and personality. Identity is one modern variant of speaking personhood that relies upon assumptions about and desires for coherence and completeness. Identity is simultaneously a category, a social position, and an aff ect.
