ABSTRACT

Despite the stark, arid conditions typical of the great Central Asian plateau, Mongolia contains several significant systems of rivers and lakes that support a variety of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife and enhance the region’s exceptional natural beauty. If carefully developed and properly promoted, a tourist industry could be developed that would contribute to the nation’s economic development without damaging its priceless natural heritage. The combination of unspoiled surroundings and an unusual variety of game fish have the potential to attract sport fishermen from around the world. Also, since over 30 species of fish found in Mongolia are commercially valuable, there are opportunities to develop an indigenous fishing industry in some areas. As with all natural resources, however, it is vital that plans be developed to ensure sustainable use.
