ABSTRACT

Since I was .one of the first to write a critical analysis of Kohlberg's work, let me hasten to point out that I do not share the current distemper for 'progressive educational reforms', one of which I would characterize as Kohlberg's work on moral development. Therefore, I do not wish to give consolation to the 'new right' in educational thinking which tends to trivialize Kohlberg's immense contribution to moral discourse and practice. In order to commence with a discussion of Kohlberg's work for moral education, it will first be necessary to locate his work in the larger context of American educational philosophy.
