ABSTRACT

Vine's critique of Kohlberg is a fairminded and sympathetic one, since Vine is willing to assume that, in principle, a culturally universal cognitive-developmental theory of morality can be created. In fact, Vine and I are in essential agreement on a number of points. Most importantly, we agree that some, but not yet enough, empirical evidence exists to support the cultural universality of 'hard' moral Stages, 1 to 3 or 4.
