ABSTRACT

SUMMARY. This paper describes the significance of Japanese consumers in today's global marketplace, as well as unique accommodations, amenities, products and services provided by hotels to Japanese consumers. The business and resort hotels included in this preliminary and descriptive study were located in the ten U.S. states most frequented by Japanese travelers. Sales managers of 50 prominent U.S. hotels located in major cities representing these destinations were surveyed. Twenty-six percent of the hotels represented are entirely owned by Japanese corporations, with 71% of the hotels offering Japanese staff in-room information and brochures written in Japanese. Forty percent of the respondents perceived the availability of appropriate shopping areas to be important to Japanese travelers.
