ABSTRACT

Even though colleges and universities in the United States and other Western industrialized countries have been offering courses in family relations since the 1930s, discussions of a coherent discipline of family science did not really emerge until the 1980s (NCFR Task Force, 1988). Since that time, there has been considerable attention paid to the many programs that offer professional training in this area (Day, Quick, Leigh, & McKenry, 1988) and the various career options that exist for graduates in the field (Holman & Vance, 1989).
