ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the reality of education in Latin America in the aftermath of these international initiatives. It explores tensions and achievements in the region following widespread recognition that more should be done to address the educational needs of women and girls in developing countries. The book aims to provide the description of educational indicators to probe measures and initiatives to correct undesirable situations affecting the education of girls and women. It describes three strategically important actors in the quest to improve education for women and girls in Latin America. These are, national ministries of education and their plans for education reform; organizations in civil society that provide nonformal education for adult women. and international cooperation agencies that channel financial and technical assistance to national governments and to the organizations in civil society that are providing education to adult women.
