ABSTRACT

This chapter takes the case of Senegal, a country that at first sight appears to be a fine example of successful creative industries development, based on learning and innovation, bolstered by an increasing international reputation. The success of musicians such as Youssou N’Dour has created a visibility and an appreciation for West African music in general, in addition to highlighting the music of Senegal. On the basis of this, one might assume that music had become an industry, and that it was delivering significant benefits to both artists and the nation. However this potential has not yet been achieved, and until critical obstacles and weaknesses in the Senegalese music economy are resolved, it is unlikely to be.
