ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION With the development of technological communication, access to international travel, and increases in immigration, it seems that societies are becoming more and more diverse. ˆese changes in the way that we interact with one another allow us to experience people from di“erent cultures, religions, races, ethnicities, and nationalities (Samovar & Porter, 1995). As a result of these developments, as well as changes in the taboos against interracial and intercultural couples, it is not surprising that the number of intercultural couples is increasing. In fact, “a record 14.6% of all new marriages in the United States in 2008 were between spouses of a di“erent race or ethnicity from each other. … ˆat gure is an estimated six times the intermarriage rate among newlyweds in 1960 and more than double the rate in 1980” (Passel, Wang, & Taylor, 2010, p. ii).
