ABSTRACT
A major goal of the life sciences is to elucidate general principles or properties of living organ isms that are applicable (or analogous) across species. The classic example is the discovery of the underlying chemical structure of the DNA molecule, the basic unit of heredity. Regardless of species, the biochemical code mediating the storage and replication of genetic information remains the same. Accordingly, molecular bi ologists studying single-celled organisms may gain insights into the means by which genes influence the development of more complex plants and animals.
