ABSTRACT
This essay focuses on the hearing abilities of animals (what they hear) and the selective pres sures involved in the evolution of hearing (why they hear as they do). The data consist of behav iorally determined measures of hearing in ver tebrates and insects-the two groups of animals in which hearing is most highly developed. These are supplemented, where necessary, with electrophysiological measures of hearing.
