Any account of the physiology of behavior im plies that behavior depends on the properties of matter and energy rather than on a nonphysi cal mind or will. Many of the early proponents of a natural-science approach to behavior and its physiology focused on invertebrates, which generally have simpler and more predictable behavior than do most vertebrates and for which a naturalistic explanation of behavior seemed easier to defend.
