ABSTRACT
Sleep is a ubiquitous and highly species-specific behavior across the animal domains. Compara tive analyses of this range of behavior have con tributed substantially to our conceptualizations of sleep. In this essay a theoretical model of the determinants of sleep will be outlined, some of the ranges of animal sleep will be described, and some of the implications of these species char acteristics will be considered.
